There are estimated 11,000 species of birds worldwide, and in those species of birds, there is extravagant diversity.

The assignment this week is to engage with a bird. This could be an observation of a bird outside a window or it could be in an immersive natural space like a hike or pilgrimage.

As long as possible, observe this bird. Notice the size, colors and patterns on the bird, notice its interaction with the world (is it feeding, making a nest, interacting with other birds, singing, flying, swimming, etc.).  Are you able to identify this bird? (The Audubon Bird App allows you to look up birds, explore information about them, and listen to their songs).

Take a moment to say hello to the bird. Ask the bird how they are. Thank them for their song. Wish them well as they seek to find a mate, build their nest, care for their young, search for food, or prepare for migration.

As you take this time to focus on this bird, take time to see this bird through the perspective of sacredness.
As the bird interacts with the living world, pay attention to the trees, plants, other animals, and people around them. See each living thing through the lens of sacredness.
